Capitec reports 23% earnings increase as client base reaches 26-million

The bank achieved headline earnings of R16.8bn for the year ended February 2026, with return on equity at 31%.

Capitec Bank Holdings reported headline earnings of R16.8bn for the financial year ended February 2026, a 23% increase from R13.7bn in the prior year, as its active client base grew to more than 26-million.13 Headline earnings per share increased 23% to R146.06, while operating profit before tax rose 25% to R22.18bn.1

The Stellenbosch-based group's total active personal banking clients grew 7% to 25.2-million, with fully banked clients increasing 12% to 9.9-million, representing 39% of the active client base.1 The bank declared a final dividend of R53.60 per share, bringing the total dividend to R79.80, up 23% year-on-year.1

Net interest income rose 19% to R24.1bn, driven by growth in lending activity across both personal and business banking.1 Personal banking loan disbursements increased 27%, while business banking disbursements rose 48%.1 Total loan disbursements grew 34% to R98.3bn.1

"We are approving more because we know our clients better, not because we have lowered the bar," the group stated.1 The bank attributed personal banking lending growth to targeted offers informed by data analytics, while scored lending drove business banking expansion.1

Capitec's earnings are now diversified across four divisions, with personal banking contributing 41% of headline earnings, insurance 27%, fintech operations including value-added services and Capitec Connect 26%, and business banking 5%.34 The group achieved a return on equity of 31%.34

"The trust that 26-million South Africans place in us is something we value deeply, and it remains the foundation on which we continue to build," said Graham Lee, Capitec group chief executive.34

The results coincide with the bank's 25th anniversary.34 In the short term, Capitec plans to focus on expanding its payments ecosystem and embedded financial solutions.1
