German carmaker positions new battery-powered sedan as rival to BMW i3 with distinctive coupé design.
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its first electric C-Class sedan, initially available as the C400 4Matic model with all-wheel drive and a claimed range of up to 762 kilometres on the WLTP cycle1. The German manufacturer positioned the vehicle as a competitor to the BMW i312.
The range-topping C400 4Matic features two motors producing combined outputs of 360 kilowatts and 800 newton-metres, enabling acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in four seconds and a top speed of 210 kilometres per hour1. The main motor is located at the rear, with a front motor that engages as needed and disengages when not required1.
The vehicle's 94-kilowatt-hour battery uses 800-volt technology, allowing it to recharge for a 325-kilometre range in 10 minutes1. A one-box braking system optimises energy recovery during braking to extend range1. Additional electric C-Class variants with rear-wheel and all-wheel drive are scheduled for release in 2027, with one model expected to offer up to 800 kilometres of range1.
The design features short overhangs and a coupé-like silhouette, with a drag coefficient as low as 0.222. Exterior elements include a large front grille with 1,050 illuminated dots, narrow LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights, and optional pop-out door handles with the Keyless-Go package2. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches, and circular taillights with a star design are fitted at the rear2. The boot provides 470 litres of storage space2.
Optional features include Airmatic air suspension and rear-axle steering, which Mercedes-Benz said provides handling similar to the S-Class while reducing the low-speed turning circle1. Interior materials include Nappa leather and trim options ranging from open-pore wood to carbon fibre, with vegan upholstery certified by The Vegan Society available2.
