Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have entered the final stretch of the Betway Premiership season locked in a two-horse race for the championship title, with Pirates holding 58 points from 25 matches and Sundowns on 56 points from 23 games.12 The Buccaneers lead by two points but have played two matches more than their rivals, with Pirates facing five remaining fixtures and Sundowns seven.12
Pirates responded to recent dropped points against Siwelele FC and Richards Bay with a 3-0 victory over AmaZulu at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.123 The result restored their position at the top of the table after Sundowns were out of domestic action, having beaten Esperance Tunis 1-0 in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal to reach the final with a 2-0 aggregate.3
The title race intensifies this weekend with Pirates facing Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto derby at FNB Stadium on Sunday.34 Chiefs, though out of title contention, meet both championship contenders before the season's conclusion on May 23, facing Pirates this weekend and Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on May 6.3 Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi said "control is important for us" and emphasized the team must "focus on the details, being incisive in our attack, control the transitions, and we have to be highly clinical in front of goals."4
Neither team will be distracted by the Nedbank Cup final on May 2, where Durban City face TS Galaxy.12 Sundowns, however, will contest the two-legged Champions League final against AS FAR of Morocco on May 15 and 24, after the domestic program concludes.12
Sundowns have been in menacing league form with 10 consecutive wins as part of a 14-match unbeaten run.3 Former player Teko Modise predicted Sundowns would claim their ninth consecutive league title, citing their experience and squad depth: "Sundowns understand the pressure that comes with being at the top... They are able to rotate the squad and still grind out results."7
