Second Ekurhuleni official arrested, to appear with Mkhwanazi on fraud charges

A 40-year-old senior municipal official was detained Sunday, one day after the metro police deputy chief's arrest.

A senior Ekurhuleni municipal official was arrested Sunday morning in Johannesburg and will appear alongside suspended Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi in Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday¹². The 40-year-old official faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice, according to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe¹.

Mkhwanazi was arrested Saturday morning on the same charges and has been detained at Midrand police station¹. He is accused of fraudulently fitting blue lights to a fleet belonging to alleged cartel member Vusi "CAT" Matlala¹.

Mkhwanazi testified for several days before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria about his dealings with Matlala³. He has also been accused of running a kidnapping and extortion racket within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department³.

ActionSA called for Mkhwanazi's immediate contract termination following his arrest, stating in a release that he has brought both the EMPD and the City of Ekurhuleni into disrepute³. The party said he has forfeited his credibility and should not remain employed by the metro³.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has continued its probe into Mkhwanazi².
