Second Ekurhuleni official arrested, to appear with Mkhwanazi on fraud charges

A 40-year-old senior municipal official was detained Sunday, one day after the metro police deputy chief's arrest.

A senior Ekurhuleni municipal official was arrested Sunday morning in Johannesburg and will appear alongside suspended Metro Police Department deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi in Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday12. The 40-year-old official faces charges of fraud, corruption and defeating or obstructing the ends of justice, according to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe1.

Mkhwanazi was arrested Saturday morning on the same charges and has been detained at Midrand police station1. He is accused of fraudulently fitting blue lights to a fleet belonging to alleged cartel member Vusi "CAT" Matlala1.

Mkhwanazi testified for several days before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria about his dealings with Matlala3. He has also been accused of running a kidnapping and extortion racket within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department3.

ActionSA called for Mkhwanazi's immediate contract termination following his arrest, stating in a release that he has brought both the EMPD and the City of Ekurhuleni into disrepute3. The party said he has forfeited his credibility and should not remain employed by the metro3.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has continued its probe into Mkhwanazi2.
