Two senior Ekurhuleni Metro officials were arrested over the weekend on charges of fraud, corruption and defeating the ends of justice, police said.1 A 40-year-old senior municipal official was arrested Sunday morning, one day after the arrest of suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi.1 Both suspects were scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.1
Mkhwanazi had recently spent several days testifying before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria about his dealings with alleged criminal cartel member Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala.2 He has also faced accusations of running a kidnapping and extortion racket within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department.2
ActionSA called for Mkhwanazi's immediate dismissal from the metro police force following his arrest.2 The party said in a statement that Mkhwanazi had brought both the EMPD and the City of Ekurhuleni into disrepute and had forfeited his credibility.2 ActionSA said he should not remain in the employ of the metro.2
Police did not immediately disclose the identity or position of the second official arrested Sunday, nor did they provide details about the specific allegations against either suspect.1
