Madikizela-Mandela estate dispute continues over delayed court filings

Attorney accuses grandson Zondwa Mandela of obstructing estate finalization through failure to file legal arguments.

A family dispute over Winnie Madikizela-Mandela's estate has entered a new phase, with attorney Ismail Ayob alleging that her grandson Zondwa Mandela has failed to advance legal proceedings he initiated in October 2024.12

The conflict began when Zondwa Mandela sought a court interdict to prevent his aunt, Zenani Dlamini-Mandela, from being declared sole executor of the estate.12 He also requested the Johannesburg High Court compel the master of the high court to appoint a senior advocate as co-executor.12

After his appointment as co-executor, Zondwa Mandela stated the estate had been misrepresented by Dlamini-Mandela and Ayob as consisting only of two properties valued at R1.7-million and household artefacts worth R200,000.12

In an affidavit filed 13 April, Ayob accused Zondwa Mandela of failing to file heads of argument supporting his initial application despite repeated attempts to prompt action.12 Ayob stated the delay in winding up the estate resulted from this failure.12

Ayob further claimed Zondwa Mandela had been uncooperative in his duties as co-executor, including failing to respond to calls for meetings outlined in Dlamini-Mandela's answering affidavit.12 Dlamini-Mandela filed her answering affidavit in March 2025.12

The estate dispute concerns the anti-apartheid icon who died in 2018. The matter remains before the Johannesburg High Court.
