A 58-year-old man was arrested after a confrontation between two drivers escalated into gunfire in Emmarentia on Sunday.
A road rage incident in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, on Sunday afternoon left one man dead and two others wounded after a confrontation between two drivers escalated into a shooting.12 The deceased has been identified as Zawar Faisal ul Rehman, who will be buried at Westpark cemetery on Tuesday.5
Police said the incident began with an altercation between two male drivers that turned physical.12 According to Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a female passenger suspected to be the wife of one of the drivers retrieved a firearm from the vehicle, after which the second driver also drew a firearm, resulting in a shooting that killed her husband and left both her and the other driver wounded.123
A 58-year-old man was arrested and is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday facing charges of murder and attempted murder.35
Witnesses described the incident as beginning with what car guard Xolani Makhoba called "minor contact between the vehicles" after the drivers attempted to overtake one another on Barry Hertzog Avenue.4 The argument escalated from a verbal dispute to a physical altercation between the two men.4 Witnesses said the woman pulled a gun from her dress and fired two warning shots into the air before attempting to hand the weapon to her husband, prompting the other driver to open fire.4 The deceased man's two children were present and one attempted to save him through CPR.45
The lawyer representing the accused, Mohammed Yusuf Razak, said his client will plead self-defence.6 Razak said the deceased had been driving aggressively in a white BMW and side-swiped the accused's vehicle, and that during the confrontation the deceased grabbed the firearm from his wife and discharged it in the direction of the accused.6 "The video is clear and shows the sequence of events as they unfolded, and everything fits with my client's version," Razak said.6
Nevhuhulwi urged drivers to abide by traffic rules and exercise patience while using public roads to avoid road rage situations.123
