Police officer killed, colleague critically wounded in Mthatha shooting

Two detectives from the Madeira unit were attacked while returning home from duty in the Eastern Cape.

A police officer was killed and another critically wounded after they were shot in Ngangelizwe, Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday afternoon.¹² The two officers, both attached to the Madeira Detective Unit, were returning home from duty when the incident occurred at approximately 16:30 in the New Brighton area.¹²

The male officer died at the scene, while the female officer remained in critical condition in hospital.¹² Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana said the names of the officers would be released once next-of-kin notification had been completed.¹²

Gantana described it as an active crime scene and said further information would be shared in due course.¹ Police were still combing the scene for clues.²
